Qualifications are necessary but not sufficient. A first-class degree doesn't automatically make someone a great tutor. Here are the seven qualities that truly matter.
1. They explain, not just repeat
Great tutors don't just read from a textbook or repeat the same explanation louder. They find different angles, analogies and examples until the student genuinely understands. This requires patience and creativity — not just subject knowledge.
2. They listen more than they talk
The best sessions are student-led. A great tutor asks probing questions, listens carefully to responses, and identifies exactly where understanding breaks down. Talking at a student for 60 minutes is lecturing — not tutoring.
3. They track progress and adapt
Every session should build on the last. Great tutors keep notes, identify trends in mistakes, and adapt their approach based on what's working. If a student has plateaued, they change the method — not the student.
